“To Palliare” is a Latin word that means to cover something. While the term may sound complex, palliative care in its essence is a compassionate service to humanity. At its heart, palliative care is about relieving suffering and restoring comfort when cure is no longer possible. Beyond definitions, palliative care is about standing with people at their most vulnerable moments.
Palliative care is a holistic approach that addresses the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of patients and caregivers experiencing life-limiting illnesses. The primary goal is to improve the quality of life for the patients. It is provided by a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and volunteers. Palliative care can be delivered in hospitals, hospices, and even at patients' homes. I can be delivered alongside disease-focused treatment, while compassionate care and effective communication are the cornerstones of quality palliative care. It also provides dignified end-of-life care. More than 80% of cancer patients need Palliative Care at any stage of the disease.
According to the World Health Organisation, around 40 million people globally require palliative care. Currently, just 14% of patients can obtain this care. The unmet need for palliative care remains one of the most pressing global health challenges. Every year, more than a million people in India are afflicted with cancer, with two-thirds of them being diagnosed at advanced stages. Many of them need palliative care, yet only 2% have access to it. Cancer Care Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting cancer patients, has taken on the initiative of establishing a "Palliative Cancer Care Centre" in the near future. We hope to set up the world's best palliative care hospital in Rajkot within a year, combining both modern and traditional facilities. Its goal is to provide these services for free to those in need. The hospital will serve all religions, communities, and patients from all walks of life. These facilities are designed to create a calm, dignified, and patient-friendly environment. We intend to "add Life to their days, rather than add days to their life". Our approach is anchored in the belief that every life deserves comfort, meaning, and respect.
Complementary therapies such as Naturopathy, Yoga, and Meditation, as well as nutrition, support patients' overall health and healing. All of these facilities including a prayer hall and a multi-faith temple will be available at the centre. There will be a small theatre and a game zone to keep patients entertained and active. It is planned to start with 20 + 5 beds, which will be expanded in the future depending on needs. Ayurveda and homoeopathy options will be accessible for symptom control based on the patient's and family's preferences.
